Tether two dogs together

Two of our dogs have been going to the farm where we keep horses for years. One is a pit-lab mix named Kara. She has been going to the farm since she was a puppy and is almost 11 now. The other is a boxer named Mikey (7) who has been going to the farm for about 4 years. Both have been allowed to run free there and will stay within a reasonable distance and return frequently to a base area. We have a Husky mix puppy (Zoey) who is 2 1/2 and we want to allow her the same freedom but my wife is afraid she will run away and not return. I have an idea that we could tether her to Kara and allow them to run together but my wife sees nothing but problems with the arrangement. I think they will work it out together and Zoey will learn the routine. Can this work? Anyone with similar experiences? Any horror stories?

I've done that with my dog who had iffy recall when going out on outings with his best buddy who's a gsd who has great recall. If he ignored me calling she'd also herd him and nip and growl at him until he came back to get away from her lol. It worked great with them but they're bonded and never fight.

I didn't try it with my horses because neither of them were great about coming back to me with horses around. It could work if the younger dog listens to the older dog and if the older dog takes charge a bit.

I could see risks as well though

I would be worried if they went out of sight and got tangled up. As long as someone was watching them, I think it could work but I would not do it if they are not supervised.

It’s important that you make a rule (and consistently enforce it) that the dogs can’t “play” when they are tied up. We like to play and wrestle, but when we’re tied up it’s too easy to get a leg (or worse) wrapped up by the rope. Since we’re wrestling, when something gets wrapped up, it gets really, really tight really, really fast. That can be really, really bad.

I can envision the pair clearing the barn aisle to the detriment of the horse owners.

Why not just put Zoey puppy on a long line by herself?

I would honestly be very hesitant to tether an older dog to a young super energetic dog.

May be annoying to the 11 year old pit lab mix. If either dog becomes frustrated or aggressive neither dog will be able to move away to avoid the confrontation right? Fight or flight, right? A trapped dog is more likely to fight since they cannot run away and distance themself. I wouldn't want to chance it, even if they are getting alone well together.

Will someone be watching them the entire time as if in a recall training session if they are going to be tethered to eachother?

My friend tethered two dogs together about a year ago...not good. They got tangled and one ended up getting strangled to death. Sorry. Horrible story. Didn't want to mention it, but it happened. Better safe than sorry, I say.

I personally wouldn't recommend it tbh. I see way too much risk of the dogs getting tangled and/or into a fight. However, I would definitely put the husky puppy on a long line. Huskies are very independent dogs and her running off and not coming back is a very real possibility. That is one breed I woul never trust off leash
