suddenly running too far ahead off leash

maddi is usually very good off leash. she runs ahead, stops and waits for me to catch up, then continues on. if she goes too far i will tell her to wait for me and she will. however this past week has been different. she is running too far ahead, not waiting when i tell her to, and running off the pathways.

she does come back, but im paranoid that she may run too far and not realize where i am to come back to. shes on a long leash for now so she can still have some freedom, though i would like to work on this with her so we can go back to letting her run her energy out on her walks. im at a loss as to what to do other than calling her back and giving her a treat every so often...

I think that's just it Jess. Positive reinforcement and using the leash as you are doing. I had a male dog who did this too, it's difficult, but you are doing the right thing. Perhaps keep calling back and rewarding after short distance repeatedly, and have your treat pocket visible!

According to Maddi's page it says she's one. This is a typical behaviour of a 1 year old dog. Once they are this age, they are more aware of everything around them. Extra practice with recall is in need, with lots of positive reinforcement. In certain area's where you may question if she'll listen, then be on the safe side and put her on a long leash and practice recall on that. You want to set the dog up for success, instead of expecting to much of the dog and then getting disappointed when she doesn't respond the way you'd like.
Good luck.
