Sudden barking/aggression scared at night ?!!!!! Help!

Hi,
So my dog is 1yo and always have been pretty chilled. He doesn’t bark much and he is quite scared of loud noises and falling objects.
So today at 11:00 pm he ran out the dog door and started barking excessively in the gardens and will not come in. I had to open the whole door to let him in and to prevent this, I locked the dog door.
At 1:50am, I heard loud banging sound and dog barking sounds. My dog broke through the whole dog door and started barking for a whole 30 min straight and will not come in. He seemed scared ( tail down ) and doesn’t seem right. I didn’t open the door because it’s midnight and pretty weird dangerous.

It all seemed weird , my dog would never try something that doesn’t work or creates a loud sound (like breaking through the dog door ). He always seemed fine with being alone at night and doesn’t bark at all being left alone.

Advice? thanks

Did you go out to the gardens with him to see what he was barking at?

Whenever my dog does anything like this we go outside to the yard with a flashlight and look around to see if there is anything out there, like a possum or raccoon, etc.
Owls are recently making noises around my house lately, but my dogs don't seem to care, thankfully.

For a bit, my Puma pup, also 1 year, kept going to one fence and barking at night. We determined the fence was making some sort of creaking noise or something over there was making a noise that she could detect. We had to go out and get her with a leash so she wouldn't bother the neighbors.

Did he only do it that one night? Or is it ongoing?

Maybe if he does it again, go out there, ask him gently "what do you see?" then look with flashlight. Be reassuring, not mad bc he is barking. Then take him inside with a leash. If he resists bring yummy food bites to entice him to "leave it" and come back inside with you. I have had to do this with Puma at times.

Can you block off the room with the door that he broke through? We use baby gates at night to keep all 3 of my dogs in our bedroom so they cannot go outside or peruse around the house at bedtime. Sometimes Puma wants to go out after bedtime, but we gently tell her no, sorry, we have to go to sleep now.

Hi,
Thanks for all the advice.
He never does this, it’s the first time I’ve encountered this situation. He was just barking non-stop all of a sudden. It’s quite weird that he broke the whole dog door just to get out.

You are very welcome!

It is pretty crazy that your dog broke the door down!! Must have been something pretty amazing out there!

One night, my sig other went out of town so I had all three dogs that night. Suddenly in the wee hours of the night, one of my dogs, my shy fearful cautious Gracie dog started going beserk. We were all in bed at the time.
Unlike her, bc normally she is very quiet and hardly ever barks. (except at other dogs..)
So, I took her outside to see what all the fuss was about, hoping no one was in my backyard. Sure enough there was a baby raccoon out there. Ummmm well. Was. I pray the baby raccoon was previously injured or non living, bc by the time I got to it, it was no longer living. I was freaking out. I have no idea if she hurt the animal in any way. Anyway I called my sig other at 3 in the morning in his hotel and I was crying hysterically trying to figure out what to do next. I couldnt leave the raccoon there bc then my dogs would "find" it in the morning. Eewwwwww.

Anyway, I got brave and dealt with it. OMG so sad. It was a really, really cute looking baby raccoon. Looked like the sweet stuffed animals I sell in my shop.

What a night for my sig other to be out of town, right?????
