Did you go out to the gardens with him to see what he was barking at?
Whenever my dog does anything like this we go outside to the yard with a flashlight and look around to see if there is anything out there, like a possum or raccoon, etc.
Owls are recently making noises around my house lately, but my dogs don't seem to care, thankfully.
For a bit, my Puma pup, also 1 year, kept going to one fence and barking at night. We determined the fence was making some sort of creaking noise or something over there was making a noise that she could detect. We had to go out and get her with a leash so she wouldn't bother the neighbors.
Did he only do it that one night? Or is it ongoing?
Maybe if he does it again, go out there, ask him gently "what do you see?" then look with flashlight. Be reassuring, not mad bc he is barking. Then take him inside with a leash. If he resists bring yummy food bites to entice him to "leave it" and come back inside with you. I have had to do this with Puma at times.
Can you block off the room with the door that he broke through? We use baby gates at night to keep all 3 of my dogs in our bedroom so they cannot go outside or peruse around the house at bedtime. Sometimes Puma wants to go out after bedtime, but we gently tell her no, sorry, we have to go to sleep now.
