Slight brag I guess

My dog and I passed the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen test!!! . I'm so proud of him!!!

It's nice to feel like we made so much progress over the years when I remember all our adventures and frustration in the beginning. It was literally done in the shelter that I got him from which he remembers and whenever I've brought him there he's always been a bit freaked out. So I didn't think he'd get through the staying alone with a stranger part with his separation anxiety, especially being where he was abandoned before (although he was transferred there from a different shelter). He did whine but made it.

And of course when we were waiting to start, we had to be next to the room with three huge white bunnies hopping freely around everywhere. I couldn't hide them from him no matter what I did.
The one thing that sets his mind into take off runaway completely ignore everything and hyper obsess fixate mode and ignore everything else is one bunny. Three huge bunnies had him not even knowing his name.
Not the mindset I wanted him going in to start the test with lol. Even after spending over two hours in the dog park and field to make sure he was tired and a long time in the busy lobby and other public places practicing that day, he got a second wind for the bunnies.
But still pulled it together when I asked him to.

I've only done horse shows before so it was a new challenge. Fun but exhausting in a way I didn't anticipate. Horse shows i used to get tired from the exercise of riding.

I took him to meet and play with one of his best buddies that he hasn't seen in a while right after the test as a reward. They played a little while then he passed out lol. So did I when we got home.
AthenaLove, Chas and lynsey like this.

Thanks! Yes I'm very proud of him, and it's definitely been a struggle and a very long road.
If I could do that with him, there's really hope for any shelter or rescue dog out there. He's completely unrecognizable from how he was his first few months with me and what the shelter and his last owners described.
We literally had two days notice from when I tried to schedule the test to when we had it, so had two days crash course in refining things he knows. Stay, not anticipating other commands, (he likes to sit and immediately start giving paws, and when he lies down he immediately starts rolling over so getting him to just sit and stay still and lie down and do nothing else consistently was challenging).
But it was a great learning experience!

Thanks Athenalove!!!
OMG with the bunnies!!! Lol and THREE huge ones!!! He's never seen three at once before, just seeing one has gotten him to knock down all of my friends with his 90 pound rocket launch.
He literally loses his mind when he sees one.
He went into outer space mentally when the three of them were hoping around in front of him.
He will ignore anything else when I see leave it. Just bunnies.

After three hours at the field he loves, the dog park, having him play and avoiding a fight with a dog there that picked a fight with him once and interspersing that with training and walking him in the busy crowded lobby, I had him in the perfect attentive mindset.
Completely out the window when he saw the bunnies! He does the same chattering and yelping that cats do when they see prey they can't get to. Loses his voice and everything.
