Separation anxiety in crate

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with their dogs chewing/licking the fur off their paws when left alone in their crate. We have a 10 month old golden doodle who suffers from separation anxiety and it doesn’t seem to matter how long or short of a time we leave him in the crate, when we get home his paws are always soaking wet and fur is missing.

Would it be cruel to put him in a cone before we put him in the crate? I realize this is just a bandaid solution and doesn’t solve the route of the problem. Suggestions??

We have tried leaving out of the crate in a closed in bedroom but he has caused damage to the door and trim trying to get out.

Sounds like a problem that is only going to get worse. He sounds very stressed. Have you tried giving him things to occupy his time and entertain him? Treat dispensing toys, squeak toys, long lasting chews, etc. Also I'd make sure to have the largest crate you can get so he's not so blocked in.

When you are home I'd try to make his crate a safe/fun place for him to be so that he's not only in it when he's left alone for long periods. Then it becomes something he hates.

A dog door & free reign of the house & backyard. Fully fenced. Put things away you dont want chewed. My dog didnt wreck any doors once she had this & the sep angst licking will very likely stop. Add a sandpit & things for the puppy to amuse itself in. My dog digs in the sandpit for hours & buries things in there. I also have a plastic paddling pool which she loves when its hot. Try smartcam so you can check on your dog from your cell when your out, the samsung wifi one has two way talk. Dogs find it reassuring to hear your voice. My dogs sep angst gave me sep angst! I was worried about her being worried, so the smart cam helped me just as much as her.

I do have puzzle toys in the crate with him and his crate is pretty large. Also, he doesn’t seem to hate his crate. He will go in their willingly throughout the day even where we’re home. But I totally agree, his separation anxiety is giving me anxiety!! I hate leaving him alone, and soon enough I’m worried he won’t have any fur left on his feet!

We tried giving him free reign ONE time and his chewed off ALL of the trim on the big beautiful bay window at the front of our house. We can afford anymore damage at our house because we do not own it, we are renting.

I’ve also been taking him on walks around the neighbourhood before I put him in the crate, in hopes to exert some energy but that doesn’t really seem to help either. I am teacher and go back to work full time in September so I really want to figure this out before then 😞
