Seeking Advice (Dog v Dog Aggression)

Hello there!

I have a 1.5 year old male who was recently neutered. Before being neutered he began to display some very unexpected aggression. Since adopting him at 2 months, he has always been possessive and can be food/toy aggressive, but we have worked on it with him and he has gotten much much better. He lives in a home with another 2 year old female dog, and they have absolutely no issues whatsoever-- they are the best of friends. Since a young age I got him together with friends' dogs and he always did well. (Just as a note: he has no issues with people whatsoever. He has never been aggressive towards a person, whether it be a small child, baby, man, woman, biker, jogger, etc. He is literally the most cuddly dog I have ever had and loves any and all attention from people, even strangers. ALSO: this is the most intelligent and obedient dog I have ever had. He learns commands with the snap of a finger and loves training/learning new things. He runs around off leash in our yard, and we can walk him off leash without worrying about him straying away-- but we haven't done this recently due to the aggression issues.) Recently, maybe a few months after turning 1, we started to struggle with his aggression towards other dogs. When walking on the leash, he became extremely reactive to other dogs. This became worse after he was attacked by another dog, and since then has become very fearful/aggressive around all other dogs. Since he was recently neutered, I have not yet had time to begin working with him again since he is still healing, but I am wondering if anyone has similar experiences and has any advice they would like to share. Overall he is a wonderful boy and I just want to be able to trust that he is not a danger to other dogs or himself because of the recent aggression issues. THANK YOU!!! <3

EDIT: On our walk this evening after posting this thread, we ran into another dog. We were on one side of the road and the other dog/owner on the other side. My dog was 100% aware of the other dog and kept turning his head towards it but I calmly directed him forward and continued our walk home! He did not bark/growl/lunge, although I could sense his excitement/alertness. Once the other dog had moved out of sight, I praised him and gave him a treat. Hoping this is a sign we are moving in the right direction!
