Schnauzer Puppy Potty Training

Hey everyone! So my girlfriend and I are new puppy parents. We got our miniature schnauzer puppy almost three months ago when he was eight weeks old.

He immediately took to crate training well. He never cries at night when we put him up for bed and he has never gone to the bathroom in his crate.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t transitioned over to him being potty trained in the house. He’s over four months old now and still pees/poops in the house on a daily basis. Sometimes he even does it 15-30 minutes after we take him outside.

It should be noted that when we take him outside, he always goes to the bathroom. It’s just when he comes back inside, he hasn’t seemed to grasp that he shouldn’t go in the house.

We’ve tried just about everything – positive reinforcement with treats/pets when he potties outside, rubbing his nose in it when he goes inside. Nothing has seemed to work.

Since we live in an apartment, we can’t just open the back door and let him go outside any time he wants. We have to put him on a leash and take him out. But we probably take him out between 5-7 times per day. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. We are just finding it odd that he hasn’t had any problems defacating in his crate but outside of that, he pees/pooes regularly. Thank you!

4 months is just fine, ours didn't get it until 5.

We had to be really, really intensive.

Puppy was either playing with us, eating or enclosed at all times. We took her out every 15-30 minutes for a week. We restricted her to one room and then slowly introduced other rooms by play and feeding them in that room.

Good luck @SchnauzerDad15 !

That's how it is with puppies. I have a very open floorplan home so, a puppy here spends until it's 5-6 months old either in the crate or leased to me at all times with walks outside frequently. 2-3 months every 15 minutes, 4 months every 30 minutes, 5 months 45 minutes inside MAX, 6 months, 1 hour indoors and, by then 30 minutes off leash, out of crate in the house at a time.

They are 9-12 moths old before they are off leash and out of the crate all day and, they are never out of the crate at night.
