We acquired the dog 3 days ago. He is ~13 month old black & tan coonhound. He was born and has lived outside his entire life and is somewhat wild. In his previous environment, he had miles of woods in every direction, was never collared, leashed, or confined, and had other dogs to run with. And they love to hunt, not that they were hungry, they just like it. His mother would catch rabbits and bring to the pups when he was growing up. So he knows all about hunting for yummy game.
As you can imagine, he is extremely stressed after being transported 200 miles to a suburban home, with no other dogs. He appears to be in good health, and not malnourished. He does need his shots, and a good Vet check out. But I am reluctant to take him at this time, and further traumatize him.
The biggest difficulty at this time is, he will lie down when leashed, and refuse to be led. And he is one of the most skittish animals I have ever seen. Although he does seem to like us. I would like very much to be able to take him to his run-line, and various other parts of the yard. At the moment, he is staying in the garage on a 10ft lead anchored to the door track. He can go out to the grass to do his buisness.
I am seeking advice on how to proceed in the safest, most efficent mannor. I have never delt with a dog quite like this, and wish to avoid any training errors.
