Potty training and other problems from seperation

Hello all,

I have a great German Shorthaired Pointer a little over one year old. I am having problems with him because it seems that he will choose not to be alone even in extreme circumstances.

One problem is that I will let him run into the large fenced in backyard and he will go a few meters from the gate, urinate then run back to me as fast as he can. Then we will go inside and he will poop inside not too much later. This rarely happens but it still happens and is upsetting. Sometimes Ill remind him to go poop and hell run out, do it, then return.

Another issue is eating. I will fill his food bowl which is only a few rooms away and return to work around the house etc. He will follow me and I need to make special trips to the water and food bowls so he will drink or eat.

I am not sure what to do to mitigate this. He is an extremely intelligent dog so him not grasping this is really baffling to me. Any advise is appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

My dog won't eat unless I stand there with him and watch him. I usually have to remind him to finish his food and sometimes spoonfeed him a few bites. He also has separation anxiety which he's on medication for. Still won't eat without me. If I fall asleep and don't take him out he just won't go for many hours, and won't eat either until I wake up and literally feed him. Even if it's 3 or 4am.

He also has IBD and food allergies and is a very picky eater. He also just got diagnosed with hypothyroidism. You could check your dog medically to see if he has any other issues going on.
If he had other symptoms of separation anxiety, they're usually pretty extreme and disruptive.
You could try walking him for bathroom breaks or just not let him back in until he does everything he's supposed to. I remind my dog to poop all the time. But if they really have to go, you don't have to remind them.
Usually running or exercise and being out for a while will get them to go and it's good for them and distracts them from any overanxious attachment.
Will he eat treats without you?
