Plastic collar causing big problems

Hi everyone, I have a almost 2 year old Shepard mix, and a new 4 month old hound mix. My 2 year old had surgery on his front paw. now he is in a plastic collar. The problem is the when we brought him home the 4 month old freaked out about the collar and began growling FUR UP and barking at my 2 year old. I'm assuming being stressed about the collar my 2 year old attacked the 4 month old. nobody was hurt thank god. but now i have to keep the 2 year old in a separate room. now i think he feels he is being punished. they look at each other through the gate and cry but if we try to get them together the 2 year old gets very aggressive and the 4 month old gets very submissive and cries and runs away tail tucked in. They only know each other for about 3 weeks. is there anything i can do ? i know its the collar causing the problem just don't know what i can do to stop the aggression. any help would be great !! Thank you

Perhaps try taking the collar off (have someone else supervise the 2 yr old so no licking happens) and putting it near the 4 mo old to get used to it. You might even try putting it on yourself (or your arm or leg) just so the 4 mo old can see it moving around. Whenever my pup is scared of something, I always make a point of touching it and moving it and then he'll tentatively get closer to it until he realizes it's nothing.

As far as the continued aggression, I don't think I'm much help, but you could try reintroducing them on leashes without the collar to see if your 2 yr old is aggressive. You might just not be able to reintroduce until after the surgery is healed because he might feel too vulnerable like them. Just make sure you swap them in and out of the separated spaces to help the 4 mo old not feel like he's in trouble.
