Old dog's weird quirk

My 13 year old lab mix, Dude, is a wonderful old guy. He's my childhood dog. But he does this weird thing.
Going up the porch stairs, he always, without fail, stops to intently sniff the bottom one. He does this every single time, and he's done it for YEARS. Left to his own devices, he will sniff for about a full minute, concentrating only on the step. Then he will walk normally up the rest. Sometimes we're in a hurry and have to nudge, tug, call, or otherwise attempt to coax him to keep walking, and that doesn't always work.
What could he POSSIBLY smell there that grabs his attention every time? Or could this maybe just be a habit or routine he developed over the years?

I say it's probably a habit.

What other creatures are in your yard at night? Or day too I guess. My dog sniffs cats hedgehogs possums mice birds rabbits guineas & other dogs scents. Maybe something that only goes on the bottom step.

Oh, rats!!!

Yup, I was thinking critter smells also were the culprit of your dog's intense sniff fest!

We took our Puma pup to an outdoor flea market for the first time the other day and she was beside herself sniffing certain areas near the ground/cement/flooring so intently! It was as if she didn't even know us! I was so baffled bc usually she is extremely good at listening to me when I take her places, which is all the time.

But then several of the vendors told us there were tons and tons of RATS that live under the flooring so she was probably attracted to that. Yuck!

And I'm pretty sure Puma has never been around Rat Fest before. So super duper exciting to her!!! (Not so exciting for me, made me look like the worst dog trainer in the universe! Ha! Thanks, Puma!!)

So......maybe your dog is picking up the scent of some critters that live/frequent under the stairs/porch?
