Old dog's weird quirk
My 13 year old lab mix, Dude, is a wonderful old guy. He's my childhood dog. But he does this weird thing.
Going up the porch stairs, he always, without fail, stops to intently sniff the bottom one. He does this every single time, and he's done it for YEARS. Left to his own devices, he will sniff for about a full minute, concentrating only on the step. Then he will walk normally up the rest. Sometimes we're in a hurry and have to nudge, tug, call, or otherwise attempt to coax him to keep walking, and that doesn't always work.
What could he POSSIBLY smell there that grabs his attention every time? Or could this maybe just be a habit or routine he developed over the years?
