Need Advice: 6 Month Old Baby ... and Aggressive Jack Russell

So ... we have a 6 month old baby boy whom obviously is our Number 1 priority.

We also have a 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier that sadly has become much more aggressive over the years. 99% of the time he's fine ... but in the past year (even before the baby was born) he's bitten several people that come to our house and even attacked me the other day when I went to clean up his vomit.

My wife (who really isn't a dog person to begin with) really just wants him gone as she thinks he's unsafe to have near our baby. Now granted, when he's near the baby, he seems very protective and even lick his hands a lot.

So ... what should we do ????

Give him up?
Try more training??

Get more training, especially if he's safe around the baby so far it could be workable.

Have you seen the resources in this thread?

https://www.dogforum.com/general-dog-...s-dogs-115969/

Not having seen your dog, I am quite concerned that your dog has bitten several people, has enough access to your child to be licking him, and appears to be a resource guarder.

I would suggest getting a behaviorist on board to assess the situation, and personally, as a mother, I'd err on the side of caution. I would not give the dog any access to your child.

I agree that an assessment and training with a behaviorist, behavior consultant, or great trainer is a good idea.

Being in the Chicago area you should have multiple options for professionals nearby.

For behaviorists/behavior consultants search:
Find Dog, Cat, Parrot and Horse Behavior Consultants | IAABC

For trainers:
Certified Dog Trainer and Behavior Consultant Directory - CCPDT

In the meantime I would increase the management (crate or put away in another room when you have guests, no greeting unfamiliar people on walks, etc.) and read up on resource guarding (the issue that arose when cleaning his vomit may be possible resource guarding).

https://www.dogforum.com/training-behavior-stickies/resource-guarding-causes-prevention-modification-7511/

The link above from Susanlynn is also good and one you'll want to read over.

Best of luck and let us know how things are going.
