My dog suddenly seems very afraid?

We have a dog named Chili, and he's a 5 year old mix breed from Bulgary, where he used to live on the streets. He's been with us for nearly four years, and in the beginning he was very scared of everything. After much time and patience, he has grown out to be a very happy, joyful dog. He doesn't play with any toys or dogs, but enjoys your company. We thought everything was going well up til a few weeks ago.*

All of a sudden, he has grown much more scared and submissive.*
Sometimes, he will stare up at nothing like he sees something, and he's constantly hiding under the table, in the corner of the kitchen or behind the dressoir. Whenever we're outside, it's like nothing is wrong. He runs, jumps and skips like always, and is such a different dog. The second he realizes we're returning home, however, he immediately starts pulling the leash and is in such a haste to get home, like he's being chased by something. If we let him off the leash, he runs home immediately, not listening to anything we say and not watching anything. He crosses roads and cycle paths, not caring about getting hit or anything.*

Since a few weeks, he also started walking up the stairs. Especially at night, he will walk up the stairs until he's halfway up and then, when we call him, he'll turn around and go back again.

We jokingly said we might have a ghost in the house, but I'm starting to think he really sees things that we can't. He'll follow something with his eyes, while we don't detect anything out of the ordinary.*

Today, however, he went into the back yard and went through the fence into the neighbour's garden. He just sat there shaking and wouldn't come back. We went and fetched him by walking through our neighbour's house, but then he didn't want to come back inside. He did everything to avoid going into the livingroom. He tried running into the garage, upstairs and even the toilet. When we finally coerced him into the livingroom, he went right back to cowering in the corner of our kitchen, which is joined to our living room.*

If I didn't know better, I would think that he was terrified of going into the livingroom, however he has been living there for the past four years and hasn't had a problem with it before. No big changes were made, we haven't moved or replaced furniture in over a year. There is nothing I can think of that could have triggered this sudden fear.*

Does anyone know what to do?

I would get him to a Vet for a complete workup. He may be sick or in pain, which could be causing the behavior change.
