My dog has suddenly become aggressive.

I rescued my dog from a shelter when she was 5 months old. I’m not sure what she is a mix of but she used to be well behaved and never aggressive and always friendly and willing to meet new dogs. A relative left their small terrier at my house 2 years ago and the terrier used to be the one who started all the fights and fought my dog. She used to steal my dogs food and bite her and bully her. In the last few months my dog has become aggressive it seems out of nowhere. She will start growling out of nowhere at random times and I don’t understand what triggers her and then she will start to fight the terrier and they won’t stop until we pull them apart. With new dogs she is nippy and growls at them too but the aggression towards our terrier is fairly new and I don’t know what to do about it. I’m afraid of them fighting when I’m not around

Sounds like your dog has finally decided she does not like being bullied and is going to protect herself. I would definitely keep them separated when you are not home.

Do not let the other dog bully her when you are home. If you see them start to growl at each other, separate them. As it has been going on for two years, they quite likely will never be friends unless you stop letting them getting into fights.

We do separate and were feeding them separately. They play outside together and I forgot to add that they DO get along about 90% of the time but now my dog is suddenly snapping out of nowhere. We had a period of about a year they were doing really well and now there’s some aggression between them again. But it’s from my dog this time. Will taking them both to training train this behavior out of them?

Working with aggressive dogs can be potentially dangerous, and you and your dog would benefit from the help of an animal behaviour professional. The first step should be a trip to your veterinarian to rule out a medical cause for the behaviour
