First off I am the proud dog mom of a 3 year old, Black American Lab/German Shorthaired Pointer Mix, female, named Athena.
Since she was little she has not been good around small animals except for our cat, Betty.
After research I learned that German Shorthaired Pointers do not coexist well with small animals that they have not been raised with. Their hunting instincts kick in and they think of the small animal as "game."
Last night I was at my friend's house and we were baking. I had to leave to go to my parents and she said that Athena (my dog) could stay. This was not the first time that she had watched her and she was aware that she could not be around other dogs. I even reminded her before I left to not let her in the front yard because I saw a smaller dog outside running around in the neighbor's yard.
While I was away one of her friend's called and asked if her and her family could come over. They had their small Chihuahua with them and asked if they should take it home. She said it wouldn't be a problem and to come over.
When her friend's came over they did not introduce the dogs, they just allowed the dog to run inside the house. My dog saw the dog come in and bit it. My friend got her off of the dog but the dog had 3 lacerations on it's back.
This all happened in a span of 5 minutes. I arrived too late and directed them to a 24 hour clinic. I called this morning and the bill is estimated to be $3000. They are assuming that I am going to pay the entire balance.
Does anyone know if I am obligated to pay the entire amount? Am I in complete responsibility? Should I ask my friend to report it on her home insurance policy? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
