So a little over a year ago my Dad and I adopted a 6 (now 7) year old American Akita. His previous owner has Parkinsons and had to move into assisted living, and was unable to take his dog with him. So we took Patches in and ever since we have been dealing with some...problems.
The first problem we have run into has been my dog (a little miniature schnauzer) "talking" to Patches at night. I mean, hushed barks and little noises to each other in front of my dad's door while he's trying to sleep. It's as if Dandy is saying "Hey. Hey, Patches. You should wake the big guy up."
We fixed this problem by keeping Dandy in my room at night, so Patches no longer "Talks" at night. However just now he was talking to my dad through the door. Now my Dad gets up at 4:30 every morning for work. This talking between dogs usually occurs around 3am.
Like I said, the worst of this problem was fixed once we moved Dandy to my room for the night. (I'll have to make another thread involving this problem as well).
The other major problem is that Patches barks (loudly) at anyone who comes over, and doesn't STOP. He'll follow them around and bark as loud as he can, making it so that conversation is nearly impossible until we go into a different room and close the door. He's friendly with the people and loves to be petted by them, but will continue barking once they stop.
This has pretty much been a problem ever since we got him. My dad insists that Dandy is an instigator and has taught him a lot of things (tbh the only thing she taught him was to bark at his door at night, but other bad habits either developed shortly after we got him or were already there).
My question is this: How do we get him to stop barking. I've tried the citronella spray collar and the sonic egg, but he just barked through it.
