I want to give up!!

Hi guys,

I have an 8 month old Bernese mountain dog and poodle mix. He is about 65 pounds. When I first got him, he was peeing in the house like crazy but always went poo outside. He got over that, and we got to the point where I really thought he was potty trained! No more peeing in the house. But then a few months ago I got him neutered, and since then he has been peeing in the house about once or twice a month. (Always when I'm home, too). I always think its just a one-off since it doesn't happen again for another few weeks! But just in the past week he has peed three times, and he even pooped yesterday. I don't know what to do! He also is in a destructive phase; whenever I get home there are things chewed up on the floor.

Should I start crate training him again? He would be in the crate for 7 hours during the day..I know he can hold his pee for that long but I still feel bad doing that. I also have another dog and she is not crate trained, so she would be roaming the house while he is in his crate. Would a dog pen be better? Is he just going to the bathroom in the house now because he is bored? Or separation anxiety?

I have no idea what to do and I am starting to get so frustrated! If any one has any tips or any sort of advice PLEASE help me out!

I think if it were me I'd go back to using the crate until the issues clear up. Maybe start from square one again, sort of like a refresher course in potty training. 7 hours a day isnt that bad imo, and its not permanent....... Others may have something better to say, but I cant imagine going back to the crate for awhile would have any negative effects.
If your pup starts going in the crate on a regular basis though, a vet trip may be in order just to be safe.

If you ask me any behaviour that is considered "unusual" is a cause for concern. I would rule out UTI before writing this off as a misbehaviour. Especially since it has started after neutering. I've read somewhere that UTI is common after spay surgeries but as the term spay applies to female dogs, i don't know if it can happen in a male. Still worth checking.

I just want to say that crating an 8 month old puppy for 7 hours straight during the day is not a great idea. He is just coming into adolescence and needs exercise and stimulation at regular intervals, and being in a crate too long will start giving you new behavioral issues.

If you do decide to crate him, can you get a dog walker to let him out half-way through the day at least, and play with him a bit? It's just not healthy for him otherwise.

Heís still so young. I agree with checking with your vet and crating him again. Maybe start at square one. Take him out on a schedule. Donít leave him in a room alone for too long. Scold him if you CATCH him going in the house and rush him outside. Some dogs go backwards with house training, but I bet you will get him back on track again
