AlwaysTomboy, thanks for your long thoughtful reply. I forgot to respond to one of your tips. I did think of the making recall pleasant so he doesn't associate coming back to me with negative things. Even if I'm mad at him I always try to say "good come here" and pat him or give him a treat si he knows coming back was the right thing to do. I try to vary between catching him abd calling him to leave the dog park he loves. Sometimes I'll wait and leave when we're literally the last ones there and he's just lying down. Or sometimes he'll go to the gate and stand there and look at me and tell me he's done . Or I'll say are you hungry do you want your dinner? Or some steak? He knows those words very well! Lots of times I'll call him in the park, praise him with a few of his favorite bacon treats and lots of pats and rubs and enthusiastic good boys then tell him ok go play. When he does bark at suspicious strangers after dark I'll call him and say no barking so he'll run over for the treat. Every other dog in the park now runs over whenever I call him because they know he gets bacon treats! Many of them ignore their owners abd follow me around. I never just call him over to leave his favorite place. That's how I got him to come over at all and swithe from taking an hour to catch him every day.
