Question Excessive Paw Licking

My dog Frankie has developed a paw licking habit over the last year +. To provide history, at 4 1/2 (late 2016) he was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia when he dislocated his right hip. He had total hip replacement surgery, but after being cleared to resume normal activity (by 21 days), he broke the right femur. He had surgery again. Then in Nov 2017 it was time to replace the severely deteriorated left hip. We did. Then at 9 week post-op, the left femur also broke. 4 surgeries in 13 months; my poor baby.

He has recovered beautifully from all of the surgeries, but the paw licking has increased. Have researched and found that paw licking can be behavior to alleviate pain, i.e. 'licking their wounds', this can then become an obsessive compulsive behavior, even after the pain is gone. We also worried about food allergies and switched him to grain free - the paw licking did not cease.

We try to distract him, give him toys, etc. but to no avail. He is presently on Trazadone (50 mg 2x a day) for anxiety. In the past we had increased to 100 mg and 150 mg 2x a day, but the paw licking got worse.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
