Dog training issues during quarantine

Hello, I am brand new to this forum. I have 2 boxers. My youngest, Norbert is almost 3 and we recently moved to Japan. Japan requires dogs to be quarantined upon arrival because of their strict rabies policy. We are able to keep the dogs quarantined in our home but it’s for 6 months and there time will be up mid July.

We are allowed to take them out for quick potty breaks and are supposed to bring them right back in. We have been doing ok with this but lately Norbert has been acting out when I take him outside. If he sees another dog or person he will bark and pull/lunge at them. Before we moved here he was never aggressive but he always had a lot of energy. I’m sure he’s frustrated being cooped up but I’m unsure how to handle this. He stares out the window and barks and whines at people during the day.

I want to assume he would just want to play but over time it seems he’s more frustrated and people seem to steer clear of us now and I don’t blame them.

Any tips on how to keep him from going crazy during this quarantine and also how to handle him on leash when I take him out?

Thank you and I apologize for the lengthy post.

Hello!
I am sorry to hear this is your situation - I am sure its very frustrating for you, but even more so for your poor puppies having to be cooped up for 6 months in the house! Especially if they were used to going out often before. Of course though, you have to follow the law. He could be whining and barking for 2 reasons: he could be getting aggressive because of the big change of moving for him (new place, travelling, etc) or it could be that he is sick of being in the house away from everyone. Do you know anyone in Japan that can come visit. I would still make sure he is getting socialization from others. Also, I would try to get him exercise and play time inside at least. Try buying some FUN toys - kongs, puzzles, toys that dispense treats while playing, or of course what would be VERY beneficial in your circumstance is working a lot by doing training and tricks. Dogs love to have jobs. You could teach your dog to pick up his toys, put laundry in the dryer, etc. The possibilities are endless. If you have a bit of a hallway or bigger area in your room, you could roll a ball across the floor and have him retrieve it. This will help him get some exercise for the time being. All I can say is, you will have to keep him busy for him to keep his mind right. Imagine us staying in our house for 6 months with no socialization, no play, no physical pr mental stimulation - WE WOULD GO STIR CRAZY! The same could happen for your dog I imagine. So maybe just try your best to give him lots of attention and invite others over to socialize so he doesn't forget how to be around others outside the home. Hope this helps!
