Dog smells owner before meeting?

I have no idea if this is actually a thing so I may just sound dumb and naive. Can you familiarize a new dog with a scent of someone who is currently not in that home so they are somewhat accustomed to that person before they arrive? I.e. My husband is deployed, got a new dog, want him to become familiar with his smell before he returns home

Should be able to! Hold sample out when sniffed treat or do something fun. It may or may not have a large effect for meeting the person though.

I've started having him smell their clothes and rewarding them with small treats

I think this is an interesting question & not dumb at all. I'm assuming your new dog never met your husband yet. Well, think of it like this. There are police dogs especially trained to track down scents of persons they never met, so I imagine this is very possible. I know from experience with my previous dog who had major separation anxiety, when we had to leave her, I'd put a t-shirt of mine in her crate so she had something with my scent on it to make her feel more comfortable. Of course in this case she knew me, but dogs are smart. I think the concept is a noble one & definitely something worth trying.
