Dog recently started INTENSE whining in Thebes middle of night. Please help!

Hello everyone, please allow me to explain the issue and then I will give a little background about my dog.

Just recently my 3 year old shepherd/husky mix began to whine extremely loud, pace, and scratch at the door to my room. Before this any whining would be very short lived and seemingly normal. My wife and I have tried to ignore it, but it only seems to intensify. She sounds anxious and scared out of her mind. If I get up and walk into the kitchen (where she sleeps), she immediately calms down and just lays down. She has never acted this way before. Nothing in the home has changed in a large way and it seems very abrupt that she is acting this way. It is constantly waking us up and causing us to loose sleep. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Our dog Roxy was taken from her mother a week or two early from what I understand. I acquired her from some friends of mine who got her for free from some people in town who had puppies. My friends owned her for about 8 months until they had to give her to me. They had small children and Roxy was becoming too rough for them (in a playful manner). She was often kept in a crate and was not able to get much exercise. As she moved in with me, I was able to take her to a dog park every now and then for exercise and would play with her often. I have continued this until now. Now we will take her for long walks when we can and make sure and play with her a lot. Hope this helps.

Hard to say why it started suddenly. My guess is that it ramped up pretty quickly - like over the course of a few days even. It sounds like the dog has had some anxiety about sleeping alone in the kitchen, and just figured out a strategy of escalating the whining to get you to come out.

The answer isn't to ignore it, though. She will probably eventually give up, and that solves your whining problem, but that doesn't help your dog.

If it were my dog, I would just have her sleep in the bedroom with me. There is more you could do if you really wanted to work on her anxiety, but I would start there.
