Dog park agression

I have two largish dogs (70-75lbs), that are very tall and appear larger than they are. My older (10 year old dog) has had some difficulties with other dogs in the past, been attacked while in our yard or leashed with my children present, and was very difficult around other dogs that he didn’t know, but played well with his “friends.” But has mellowed out in the last two years, and has been more sociable to new dogs. The other dog (my girlfriends, 5 years old) has always lived with another dog, and not had problems until recently. Generally, especially if there are only a few dogs around, particularly large dogs, there are no problems at the park. At times however, when we arrive people will get skittish upon seeing my dogs, and at the first act of agression towards them, my dogs (especially the younger one) will want to fight. I know that the mannerisms of people will make their dogs more protective, but I would like to train mine to ignore, or back away rather than standing their ground when we are out.

I'd stay away from dog parks before the situation gets worse... stick to walks on a leash instead.
