Dog ‘kneading’ like a cat and sucking on toy/pillow

Hi! I just have a question that I can’t find a ton of info on anywhere.

We have an American Eskimo/Pomeranian mix, we think he’s about 2 1/2. We adopted him in September and they didn’t have hardly any information on his background. In any case he’s a very sweet boy! We’re working on a few small issues that he has (socialization related things), but otherwise he is a wonderful pet.

He will very often grab a pillow or a toy, take it onto the floor and hold it in his mouth while he just lays there. If it’s a bigger item like the pillow, he’ll knead his paws exactly like cats do when they’re getting comfy.

I’m just wondering if this is normal behavior, or is there maybe something we should be concerned about? If it’s not a bad thing, we really don’t care if he does it or not. I was just worried that maybe he has anxiety or something.

Thanks in advance!

Hey! Im no expert but I can't imagine it would be anything to be too worried about as long as it isn't affecting his health or your sanity. It could be just a way he gets comfortable. Sounds silly I know but dogs can be silly indeed. For instance, my dog who is 5, sometimes jumps on the couch and literally uses her head to fluff the pillows before laying down. She's SO spoiled lol. I think if he had anxiety enough to cause concern, you would most likely see more traits like excessive barking, panting, scratching/damaging furniture, etc. What you are describing, in my opinion, isn't something to be too concerned about. Just keep an eye out and make sure it doesn't work into something more.

This is so funny - my yellow lab has always done this but only on the stuffed toy's butt. She will grab the stuffed duck, squirrel, or whatever, and begin sucking on the butt. As she "nurses" she might knead it and her eyes get all droopy and zoned out.

It's a comforting behaviour, I think. It's what they do to their mother as very young puppies to get milk. So it's helping your boy to calm down. I wouldn't worry about it as long as he's not doing it to anything really dirty.

A little dog I used to have used to suck on her back foot. It was the weirdest looking thing ever.
