| | Dachshund issues with socializing - people & dogs
We have a long haired miniature dachshund and he's about 2 years old. He's always been a very shy dog since we got him. We took him to puppy/socializing classes when he was a puppy and things were going pretty well until he got attacked by another puppy (a lab). Since then, things never really changed, for the most part we take him out for walks during the day and late at night when there's not many people. He has no issues with our family's dogs/people, but generally is very shy with strangers and occasionally will bark (not sure what triggers the bark).
Recently, we went on our honeymoon and left our dog with our parents (who he loves). My dad told me that he had taken our dog out to meet some of his friends and that our dog bit his buddy. I've never seen our dog act this way with strangers, generally he just hides (usually this is at home), so maybe it was a different atmosphere + a lot of people he doesn't know - so this was really stressful to hear.
Also, recently, we took him to the dog park and he was doing just fine until one of the dogs came and jumped on me to play, our dog got very aggressive and started to bark at the other dog until he went away and chased him down (he doesn't attack or anything, but is bark chasing). We are really worried about his socializing behavior. We have currently signed him up for socialization classes again and hope to start in the next week. My wife and I are just very nervous and don't know if it's too late since he's almost 2 years old.
Was hoping to just get some thoughts and suggestions.
