Anxiety and Thundershirt

Hi guys!

I have an anxious dog in our family .
I recently read something about thundershirt and hoped someone else here
had experience with the shirt.

Please share your thoughts and experiences if you do.

Hi! i've been there with anxious dogs before, but i've never actually used a thunder shirt for my dog. But I can almost give a full rating for the thunder shirt because it basically 'hugs' your dog tightly, (not too tight) and it supposably keeps your dog comforted as the shirt puts pressure on the dog.
You can also use something like an elastic large bandage or a long scarf and wrap it around your dog and that also puts pressure on your dog and should keep your dog calm, here is a example to show you.

Hope it helps!

Hi myoreospaniel, thank you for replying, i am going to try it out first with the bandage/scarf then, hope it will relief her even just a tiny bit. What did you do to help your dog with his/her anxiety?

In my experience, thundershirts are a "point solution". They give a sense of relief when a particular anxiety-causing event is happening - like a thunderstorm or fireworks. They're not really effective as a general, long-term method of reducing stress, simply because the dog becomes accustomed to wearing it.

Have you thought about working with a behaviorist or trainer to determine what the particular triggers are that make your dog anxious? The problem we have as owners is that we will see our dog behaving in a particular way, but we weren't observing him in the moments before that behavior started. So we don't know what set them off in the first place. A behaviorist can help with that.

I have tried a thunder shirt on my last rescue about 4-5 yrs ago it didn't help her at all
She had separation anxiety pretty badly and someone on one of my forums suggested it maybe it would help more for thunderstorms or something of that nature but unfortunately did nothing for Luna
