My fiance and I rescued a jack russel terrier / boxer mix about a year ago. Our dog is 1.5 yrs old at this point. She had a recent incident where she saw another dog and ran towards it, broke the leash, sniffed it for 2 seconds and then latched onto the side of it. I had to go running over and pry her jaws off this other dog and I'm now paying a vet bill. I also had to go to the Dr's as her tooth went through my thumb when I was prying her from the other dog. This isn't the first time this has happened...
Last summer we took her to the local dog park almost every week during the summer and she played fine with other dogs although the majority of the time she kept her eyes on us and kept a distance from most other dogs. We took her there about 20 times and two of the times she got in scuffles with other dogs and bit them but it was instigated. Twice she bit dogs in our house when we were dogsitting. I figured that she was just showing that she was the boss in this territory. But the incident the other day where she snapped the leash and bit the other dog without any reason too makes me nervous. She sits in the window almost all day waiting for dogs and cats to walk by as we live in a townhouse and she barks like crazy when she sees them.
Other issues we have are she constantly pulls on the leash and if she sees other people or animals while on the leash she does everything she can to try to get to the animals and bark loud as can be at humans. It's very embarrassing like we don't have control of our dog.
Also, when people come over she jumps up all over them and goes absolutely nuts running around the house.
I want to modify these behaviors but I need some advice. I'm thinking about getting a gentle leader to help with the pulling and talking to a behaviorist about her agression towards other anmials and anxiety when people come in the house. Can anyone else give me any other advice?
I used to really like taking her to the dog park and socializing her with other dogs but after the recent incident I don't trust that she won't immediately run in and bite another dog.
