Advice On A Couple Of Things

This past Saterday we had some family over for my nieces birthday. After a few events throughout the day, it made me realize I need to work on a couple of things with Sawyer.
The first is working with him on being able to settle in his crate. When we have people over and I put him in crate while we eat. He whines and protests a bit but eventually settles, if a bit on edge, but will lay down quitly for the most part. But if he's in his crate and we have a dog over and there free to roam around, he gets very upset. More then if there wasn't a dog. Conversely if the other dog was in the kennel and Sawyer was free to roam, he does much better. He gets a little upset as he wants to play but usually he feels more comfortable. Im not sure if this would change if there weren't people over since he was stressed from that. So I think that also escalated how he felt. Any advice on working with him on being ok in his kennel in these situations?

My other thing that I need help with is boundry training. Ive never trained it before so im not really sure were to start. To the thing that brought this up, if we have a dog over Sawyer will follow them around and wants to be with/play with them (we still have to work a bit on his doggy play manners). Well Henry heard a bird and shot off into the woods after the sound, and Sawyer ran right after him. Thank god they came right back, but I wasn't happy and having him run off like that scared me. Acording to my sister he has run off like this before but "he always comes right back" :eyeroll:. You would think for safety reasons especially when your some were that's not your house you wouldn't want that to keep happening. She's lucky that we have a lot of woods behind our house and they didn't go running down to the road. Normally Sawyers pretty good about staying in the yard/near by unless he's caught the scent of something. The other thing to is, that we have deer, and turkey's (and the occasional porqupine amoung other things) come through our yard. So I want to make sure he doesn't go off into the woods following a scent. So how do I go about boundry training?

Kikopup has wonderful videos on boundary training. She also has great videos on crate/xpen training. I'd be inclined to keep my dog happy in his own home when other dogs are present, even if that meant crating the other dogs.

PS It's a big ask for a dog to resist the smell or sight of things he is inclined to go after. So is it possible to train him stay within the confines of an unfenced yard? Good luck.
