4 year old dog suddenly dislikes crate

Recently our dog Ollie has been whining and scratching at the door of his crate. He is four years old and has been crate trained since he was 10 weeks old without any issue. We only crate him at night to sleep, however we leave it open during the day so he can go in if he wants to. Ollie usually loves his crate. It is very spacious and he has a pillow and bed to sleep on. It is in our bedroom in a position so he can see us at all times. At first I thought maybe he needed to go outside even though he always sleeps through the night. Took him out and he didn't do anything so I brought him back in and let him get a drink and run around a little. The second night it happened I let him out because he was keeping me up and he was perfectly content lying on the floor next to our bed. There have been no changes in the household or to his crate in any way. I should also mention that ollie is perfectly fine when we leave him home alone. No separation anxiety whatsoever. There seems to be no other changes to his behavior. The only issue is with his crate. It's as if a switch has been flipped and I cannot figure out what the problem could be or what is causing this sudden change..

How is the health of the humans sleeping in the room? A Dog that sleeps in your room or in bed with the humans learn their resting vitals. If those resting vitals change the dog will feel it and respond as they seem fit. Watch your dogs behavior change when your heart rate, respiration or blood pressure change. If you feel that is not the case go back to when this behavior began to see the whole picture of what created it so you can address it. Nothing is ever sudden without a cause.
