15 week old puppy crate training issues

Hi, I have a 15 week old French bulldog who we are trying to create train. On a night he is being good and only waking us up once or twice for the toilet but on a day he is a different dog. If he is blocked by something to get to you he hates it, either being in a cage or locked in the kitchen. He has also poo’d in the cage the past couple of days.

I am feeding him in his cage and trying to get him to stay in there while giving him a treat if he is good. Today I have tried to sit in front of the cage, get him to sit and he gets a treat, each time I do it I close the door more an more. Eventually build up to locking it and then me moving further away. Is this correct or do you have any other ideas?

To make things harder he fractured his elbow a week ago and has had a pin now in his leg. He has been caged bound but we have had him on the sofa at times to help him calm. Probably not the best move but at first we needed to keep him as still as possible and had to do what we could. He is on the mend and so this is why I want to tackle the crate training as he still needs to rest. I am looking for any advice or any websites you think could help.

Thanks
Matt

Not sure what recovery plan is from vet, and obviously, take that into account first. Then...
Here's a good link for crate training games:
Great Crate Games - Better Pets and Gardens

perseverance, and then some more perseverance.
Here are some time lengthy activities for inside a crate ive used successfully.
1. Marrow bone sections
2. Meat/veg stock, in a plastic water bottle, frozen over night, stab with fork, and toss that into crate.
3. Dog food puzzle toys: kong etc
4. soft fake fur blanket, that's all pluffy and luxurious
5. Buy a 2nd hand baby portable cot, and flip it upside down, as alternative crate or up right way, for small play pen.
6. Telephone book to destroy
7. Crate in garden, with grass poking through, crate on carpet, crate on tiles. change the texture of what dog feels on feet.
8. If you have a screamer: crate at bottom of garden!
9. Clicker train go in crate, come out crate, lay down in crate, stand in crate, spin in crate, clicker train anything that includes crate: go around, clockwise/anticlockwise. etc

let us know how its working out. Speedy recovery for your dog!

Thank you for the great response and I will be trying some of the games. He has been crate bound for a week but the vet will now allow him gentle exercise but I still need to work on the crate training. Issue is he has now pood in there 3 days in a row without crying to tell us. So I have bought a smaller crate and changed his bedding, hopefully will help this issue
