Unexplained scratching

Hi, My 12 year old Chessie has been scratching suddenly at various places all over her body. The vet examined her and ruled out illnesses caused by mites, and we thought that perhaps she was having an allergic reaction to something. But one odd thing recently has happened that seems a weird coincidence. She’s always loved to have her belly rubbed, but never displayed the common hind leg scratch reflex. Now, though, the leg scratches furiously at my slightest touch of her belly. Would someone please let me know if this is a common change in old age or could be related to the general itching issues she’s had?

What do you feed?
Do you give treats ? if so, what kind?
Did you change laundry detergent or fabric softener?
Did you have the carpet cleaned?
It sounds like an allergy that is getting worse (scratching with the lightest touch) and even if you have been feeding the same food for years it does not mean the company did not change the formula. :)

I used a soft curry brush all over the skin. Spreads the oils around the skin. Used a flea comb. Then brushed. Then bathed with the chlorhexidine shampoo, either the premixed or the unmixed. Then used curry again after let sit for 5minutes. Did this while I was trying to figure out what it was. I found a lot a good portion of things were related to needing to brush more often. Especially in areas prone to scratch. Got better. Did your vet do a skin scraping?
