Thoughts on possible TPLO surgery for my pup
My 3 year old lab/shepherd mix (about 55 lbs) hurt her leg several weeks ago. After about a week of limping we took her to the vet and both our vet and the specialty surgeon told us that she very likely had a torn ACL and they recommended TPLO surgery. We were absolutely going to go through with the surgery but we had to wait another couple weeks when it was better for our schedules to be able to take care of her after the surgery. After a couple weeks on the anti inflammatory pills and rest her limp was basically gone. We stopped giving her the pills and now another 2 weeks or so after that she is basically back to normal storming around the backyard. We're not encouraging her to run as she continues to heal but she's a young dog with a lot of energy and she seems to be feeling way better. On a long walk she will very occasionally skip with her back left leg (the one that was injured) but no noticeable effects other than that, she might do it 3 times on a 2 mile walk.
Again, we were absolutely prepared to go through with the surgery but with how quickly she seems to have recovered I am having a difficult time justifying going through with the surgery and the lengthy recovery. The $3,500 price tag sucks but we can afford it, the 3 month recovery of no running is what I am dreading, she's a really active dog and she usually has free reign of the house and yard all the time so it's a huge lifestyle adjustment for her and us if we have to do the surgery.
I've read that injuries to the ACL can heal without surgery but then you likely have to deal with arthritis and obviously we would like to avoid that with such a young and active dog. I would greatly appreciate some advice if someone has had some experience or been in a similar situation.
