Swollen lip with scab - bee or wasp sting??

A few days ago I noticed my puppy had a scab forming on his lip. 2 days later it was swollen like a balloon and his tongue seemed swollen too. His behavior was off as well.. seemingly more tired.. sleeping in spots where he doesn't usually hang out.. whimpering every once in a while too which was very odd. I took him to the vet and tjey had me give him 100mg benadryl. That brought down the swelling significantly. The vet said it was probably a bee or wasp sting but my pup was very ancy and moving a lot when the vet spent less than 5 minutes looking at him. They told me to keep giving him benadryl in the morning and at night for few days and gave me antibiotics. Since it seemed like the benadryl was helping a lot i didn't start the antibiotics. It's been a few days and I've stopped the benadryl and the swelling on his lip is back and the scabs are still there. Hes also still acting very tired all the time and generally under the weather. Should I start the antibiotics? Has anyone seen spmething like this? I've never had a dog until this pup a few months ago so im not sure what a sting would look like. His lip seems folded. It's really weird. Have you seen something like this before? Did it go away on it's own? Any advice you have is greatly appteciated!

I have never seen that before but speaking from someone whose puppy found a wasp nest and suffered from multiple stings... they certainly didn't present like this and the swelling went away in two days. That being said I would follow your vets instructions with the antibiotics... if only to rule things out. The fact your dog is responding to benadryl seems to point to the fact they are allergic to something... but follow what your vet prescribed to see if the problem goes away or goes down and if not or it gets worse take him back. If you don't trust your vet you can look for a second opinion too. I think he is allergic to something and if not bug bites maybe something he is eating or playing with?

I hope you find answers!!!

Thank you for your response. I've started the antibiotics and am hoping this resolves itself soon!! His lip is still slightly swollen and there seems to be more scabbibg today.. but maybe that's a sign of healing? My poor pup seems so tired everyday since this started

@ashleyadams07 the Benedryl most likely kept the symptoms at bay, but the antibiotics are what's needed to actually treat the sting so when you took him off the Benedryl you saw the symptoms come back, but he had never actually healed.

Kinda like how cold medicine just makes us feel better while we have a cold, but doesn't do anything to stop the cold.

Hopefully the antibiotics work, keep us updated!
