Swelling on dog's face

Hi there, I noticed the swelling of my 2 yr old Doberman's bottom lips last night and it didn't seem painful to touch and was soft and fleshy. I took him to an emergency vet and they couldn't figure out what it was and recommended Benadryl. I gave him the dosage and when I woke up this morning, the swelling had decreased a lot but about an hour later, a hard knot started to swell on the side of his snout. Gave him the dose again and 2 hours later the swelling kept increasing. He flinches if I try to touch it too. He's eating and drinking as normal, not lethargic, isn't scratching his nose or licking, no new food or treats. Checked the back yard, house and his toys for spiders, wasp nests, snakes or anything that he could have gotten into and nothing. Ideas?

No idea!

First, I hope this has been resolved and your baby is ok!!

I would take them to the vet you usually go to as soon as you can. Sounds like this emergency vet really wasn't trying to solve the problem. If your vet can't get you an answer, try someone else. I know financially that isn't the greatest idea, but if this keeps happening you're gonna wanna get to the bottom of this....

There are other anti-histamines that you can get from your vet other than just Benadryl.. My regular vet prescribed them for my dog when he was having severe skin allergies. If it is an allergic reaction to anything, that should do the trick, then you can try beginning to isolate what is causing the swelling. Have you switched dog foods recently? It doesn't seem like a bite/sting to me, because those usually look swollen concentrated on where the bite/sting is. My Great Pyrenees loves to chase and try to eat wasps and bees, no matter how many times she gets stung she doesn't get it! So we've seen several swollen lips but its usually just on one side where she was stung -- this swelling on your dog looks pretty even on both sides.

My pup had this happen. He was in my backyard, I heard him yelp . One hour later, his lips started to swell. I was so confused. Then in like 10 minutes from that hour his whole face was swollen , and his eyes and it was crazy. Benedryl helped, but after it went down, he had a knot by his nose. I could not tell if it was a spider bite or bee but it stayed for about a week. It was so scary to see.

If your regular vet didn't know maybe you should see a specialist. Their exams are more expensive (around $110.00 in my area), but that's because you're paying for their extra training. They deal with the harder stuff. I'd call a specialist clinic and explain the problem and see what type of specialist is recommended.
