Suggestions needed!

I recently found 2 dogs on the side of the road and decided to keep them after being unable to locate their owners, if they even had any. One is a 80 lb lab and the other is a 70 boxer. They are both girls and the vet said they were around two. I have had them for a few months now and I take them everywhere with me. I have horses so they go to the barn with me everyday and they also go to competitions with me so we do a lot of traveling. But what I was wondering is how do I get weight on them, they eat more than the recommended serving yet they dont seem to be gaining weight. I know that with horses if they start to lose weight then they might have worms. Is the same true for dogs? also I am going to buy them their shots online and I was wondering what kind I would need. We do travel a lot and they love playing with other dogs and my horses. I am going to get them both spayed when I can afford it. Are there any special shots or medicines that they need?

Yes, worms will cause those issues in dogs. If you have not yet taken them to the vet, I strongly suggest doing so. The vet will provide a dewormer and necessary shots, and will also check for any other health issues.

Sorry, I just reread your post and I realize you have taken them to a vet. They should go again though if they are underweight and not gaining weight.

What country are you in? In the U.S. they need to have at minimum a rabies shot, it's the one that's required by law and the vet has to give it to the dogs the owner is not allowed to. Other then that I'd get distemper and parvo at minimum, lepto may be something else to consider. I'd get them done by the vet because vaccines must be handled correctly and kept cold. It they are allowed to get above a certain temperature, even once, then the vaccine will not work correctly. If cost is a problem ask around about low cost vaccine clinics, where I live Tractor Supply holds them a few times a year.

As far as weight loss. What food are you feeding them? Were they wormed when you took them to the vet? The vet should have done a fecal flotation on both of them to see if they had intestinal worms and prescribed the necessary wormer. Are you finding what looks like grains of rice where they sleep, or small wiggling worm like things in their poo? If you are those are tape worm segments and they can cause weight loss if the worm burden is large enough.

I would not worm without knowing they actually have worms as it is a very harsh medication. Take a sample to a vet and have it tested first before you worm. what do you feed maybe they just need a higher calorie food

As much as you want to avoid spending the money for the Vet, your dogs need a Vet to do a workup to determine why they are losing weight. If its a worm problem, you will need to know which, so the appropriate medication is used, and that medication is hard on dogs, so they really need to be under a Vets care while you are giving them that medication.
