I know a lot of you folks have rescues and most likely have had to fatten up at least one or two. So, can you share some secrets for fattening up a dog. My Great Dane (got her as an 8 week old) pup is still young (16 months) - and I know she's still growing -- but she is just so skinny, it's embarrassing (for me - the vet did not suggest otherwise) -- especially when her ribs start showing. Problem is she should be eating at least 8 cups a day, but she refuses. She eats well everyday, but she just will not eat more than 5-6 cups total per day (plus a can of wet blended together) over 2 or 3 meals per day. I did try adding some ground turkey to her meal but that got expensive and it did not improve her appetite nor help her gain any more weight. I would not have minded the cost for the extra food, however, if it helped up her food intake or put some meat on her bones.

Her older brother also was never a big eater and was thin at her age, but never had ribs showing as she does. He is now 3 years old and eats the same amount as she does (about 5-6 cups, plus can of wet) and looks perfect - has really nice bulk and beautiful coat. They both eat Redford dry and Merrick wet.

Again, she is young and growing -- and also very active so I am sure her caloric intake is not covering her caloric expenditure - but with her refusal to take in more food, I'm at a loss as to correct this. thanks!

Look up satin balls. It's a homemade raw recovery diet that can be used to supplement finicky eaters or help bulk up dogs who need more conditioning. I mix it up in 1 lb increments for my Afghans when they go off their feed, all they need is an avaerage meatball sized portion with their food daily for a few days and they bounce right back.
