Royal Canin DNA test Vs. Wisdom Panel?

Hey guys,

Does anyone have any experience with the Royal Canin DNA test? I've really wanted to get a DNA test done on Bandit to find out his breeds, but even more importantly to find out if he is pre-dispositioned to any major health risks because of his bloodlines. I've heard of the Wisdom panel but from what I can gather it only tells me his breeds and it doesn't test for health issues unless I get the kit for breeding. The Royal Canin test is done at a vet's office and they send me a report in layman's terms and send another report to my vet with all the complicated jargon. So you basically set up a return visit and your vet tells you health-wise what turned up. This sounds really good to me and Banfield will do it for 100 (and then a 10% discount for where I work). Does anyone know if this test is any good?

No canine DNA breed test is accurate as of yet. They're a waste of money.

The last time I checked, Royal Canin and Wisdom Panel are owned by the same company. So if you get the Royal Canin one, it will basically include the Wisdom Panel breed analysis. I think whether or not your dog needs the health genetic testing really depends on the dog breed and the specific conditions that you are worried about. They claim to screen for 130 different genetic mutations, but even in the vet copy, they only give a list of 15 or so, which does include some important mutations such as MDR1 or degenerative myelopathy which could be important for some herding breeds. At the end of the day, I think the information is probably more just for fun than anything else and maybe peace of mind if you are looking or something specific that is included in the 15 gene report that your vet gets.
