Questions about heartworm treatment

We adpoted a dog from Texas over the winter, we believe he is a pitbull shepard mix. Our vet ran a heartworm test and he tested positive. We started on the doxycycline yesterday and in 60 days he will get his first injection. At this point just being on the doxy do I need to restrict his activity to bare minimum, or are walks on a leash OK? I am so afraid I am going to mess up and we will lose him, crating him is not an option as he panics and busts his way out, which will cause his heart to race.

@angee welcome to DF and congrats on the new addition! What did your vet say about activity?

My sister adopted a HW+ dog several years ago and I do know that she had to restrict exercise. I would definitely ask your vet how much exercise is safe for your pup.

Good luck!

Work with your Vet closely. Treating heartworms can be a very protracted process, and what restrictions you have to impose on your dog, depends on how advanced the case is, medications he is on and his tolerance of them.

Exercise restriction is not necessary until adulticide treatment begins (Immiticide/Diroban injections). Use common sense, but leash walks are fine!
