This is a question about my next door neighbor's puppy - he's a six month old Jack Russell terrier mix, approximately 15 lbs, who was attacked by their older 30ish lb hound/pit mix. It happened around midnight. The neighbor let her dogs out to potty, and a fight broke out between the two dogs that was so loud I heard it from inside my house. I rushed out to see what the fuss was about, because the owner was screaming as well. She had it broken up before I even got out, and the pup seemed frightened and sore, but otherwise all right. He was favoring his left front leg, which had a nasty bite mark. I cleaned it out for the owner with povidone iodine and gave him 250 mg of amoxi (I have a dog pharmaceutical in my house) to prevent abscessing.
I noticed a very
slight amount of swelling around the site of the bite, and I immediately thought possible broken leg for it to appear so quickly. But after I cleaned out the wound, the pup was running around my house, made the stairs, and was just generally zooming around the house with my Beagles (who were very concerned about him, lol). So, I'm thinking, definitely not a broken leg, if he can do all that, even though he was not putting his weight on the leg.
However, the owner just called me about a half hour ago to say the pup had been sleeping for a while, and when he got up, the leg was a bit more swollen and tender to the touch. And he seems to be in pain
I instructed her to give a baby aspirin, but aside from that, have no idea what else she can do for him. I'm 99.9% certain this pup will not see a Vet, so any "technical advice" I can pass on to her would be appreciated.
And please keep your paws crossed for the best.
