I recently switched from conventional to holistic vet and was surprised at how highly she recommended a leptospirosis vaccine.
I am going to DNA test my dog over this, which I can hardly afford, because toy breeds are at a higher risk of vaccine reactions. My dog already has been overvaccinated against parvo. We live in an area that is high risk for both diseases and my dog and I lead a high risk lifestyle.
I am gathering information and was wondering if (collective) you could help.
I do know to watch my dog carefully around standing water. I carry fresh water to offer her if I see her trying to drink from puddles, etc. I am also interested in any tips of managing the environment to reduce her risk. This is my first dog in almost forty years, so basic information is welcome and not condescending at all.
I also know that leptospirosis is zoonotic, but I don't have partner, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, etc. nor do I spend a lot of time with humans.
