Unhappy Please Help Dog has Heart Murmur

Hello,

We have a 1.5 yrs old beagle/jack russel mix 17.5lbs. Have had him since he was 3 months old.

Took him to vet to get his lyme shot today and the vet listened to his heart a long time, went and had another vet listen to his heart, came back and said that Kiko has a grade 2 heart murmur.

I tried to ask him as many questions as I could about what to do, so far the vet said we are going to monitor it every 6 months. & He said to feed him a food that has grains and a nutrient called taurine so we got him Hills Science Diet that has those things so we have to change him gradually from salmon based Supreme Source that he was eating before. He said there wouldn't really be any symptoms or cautions yet at this stage but I could make sure that he is not lethargic or coughing a lot after exercise.

The vet did not mention that I should give him a multivitamin but I found some at the pet store that has taurine in it so I want to give those to him, do you think I should ask the vet before I give him the vitamin?

Do you have experience with a dog with a heart murmur? What can I expect and what can I do? I want to help him as much as possible my husband and I love our dog so much he is like our baby. He is a happy, energetic, loving dog !!!

There are heart murmurs and there are heart murmurs. Some are 'innocent' heart murmurs, and will not have a major impact on your pets life, but some are congenital and need treatment and or surgical repair. If this were my dog, I would be taking him to a cardiologist for an echo, ekg, basically a complete cardio workup. That's the only way you are going to get accurate information as to the nature of his murmur.

Yeah, that sounds like it would be great. But it also sounds really expensive ? The vet said he would be recommending that if the heart murmur goes up a grade.

Yes, ask the vet about the vitamin. They'll probably be able to answer that via email or on the phone.

My 14 1/2 year old Yorkie Poo has a grade 3 heart murmur. Right now the vet isn't too concerned. I try not to let him get too excited as that causes him to start coughing. He can't have any type of surgery or anything that involves anesthesia because they're afraid he wouldn't wake up. The vet said that if it gets any worse they might want to put him on a steroid, but for now it's just a wait and see thing.

Science diet is junk... I'd find a higher quality food with grains (with chicken or beef as main ingredients) and give sardines for taurine.
