My pup is sick...

I have taken her to the vet already but they only found a UTI so far. I plan to take her in again this week. She is losing weight, muscle mass, and is having trouble walking/getting up. She still eats and drinks, however she won't eat her solid food, so we bought her some soft food to eat. Also, her gums are pale. She breaths weird too I am not sure how to describe it. I used to think she breathed like that because she was overweight but now she is not overweight anymore, instead we can feel her bones. She still breaths weird. I am hoping we find out what is wrong with her this week. I am so worried we may have to put her to sleep. I can't bare that again. We had to do that with our other dog because she had cancer. My dog is 10 years old about. I am so worried. I don't know what to do, besides take her to the vet.

Any ideas what might be the problem? I want to know what you might think so I can bring it up to the vet.

I would take her to a different vet as clearly your current vet missed the important stuff. Get a blood panel done. She sounds very ill. Pale gums and difficulty breathing are serious symptoms. Take her today!

Best Wishes

Took her in today and she got x-rays and a blood panel done. Blood will be back tomorrow so I will know what that says. x-rays showed she has severe arthritis, messed up spinal disks, and at one point had a broken hip that healed on its own (She wasn't in our care when that happened or we'd know it). That is why she is having trouble walking and getting up. She can't get on the couch any more or anything. It's sad to see. She must be in a lot of pain. I'm anxious to hear what the blood work says. I don't think arthritis would cause this much weight loss would it?

Interesting. Thanks for getting back to us. Arthritis should not cause weight loss unless she is so uncomfortable she has lost her appetite.

Again what concerns me is the pale gums and difficulty breathing. The blood work should tell you a lot.

Meanwhile, I would go ahead and baby her all you want. You can give her some yummy cooked chicken (no bones) to boost her food intake. Cooked chicken in general is a very mild food and is good for nearly all dogs. A little extra protein might be good. I would just add a little to her current food to make sure it agrees with her, but overall, if she's losing weight, you want to try to get her to eat a bit more!

good luck and do let us know. I myself may be out of touch some as we have no electricity at my house after the storm so I have to go elsewhere to get on the internet.

Best wishes,
Sue

Well, it seems she is losing interest in her soft food as well. I had to kind of force her to eat today, because she would just smell it and walk away. She is still drinking. I gave her a doggie cookie and she ate that too. She must be in so much pain. =( I am anxiously awaiting the blood work results. Probably will get little sleep tonight. I am probably going to cook some chicken tomorrow so I can give her some of that as well. I gave her chicken the other night too. When she was feeling not so ill. She scarfed it down.

Thank you. The blood work came back and unfortunately she has a REALLY bad liver. Doc says she needs to be hospitalized for a couple days and additional tests to be run. We will take her back tomorrow. I am so sad. I was fearing this was going to happen. =( Maybe they can fix her? I hope.

I hope everything goes smoothy! Least the test results figured out something. I'm so sorry your family is having to go through this. I hope she recovers fast and well.

Brandi is now in the doggie hospital. She is being treated and having tests run. She will be there until Saturday. Her liver is extremely bad. Vet said normal enzyme levels are about 500. Brandi's levels are 8000...He said a lot of the time that means cancer. =/ So we will find out what is wrong with her on Saturday and what we can do for her...if anything...
