Question My dog has started to wet the bed - sometimes!

Hi Everyone

I am the owner of a beautiful ex-racing greyhound who is 8 next month.

She has a lovely, loving calm temperament but is very sensitive to bangs, loud noises or any sort of surprise noise.

Since my boyfriend and I have had her we have always had to leave the back door open if out for any time so she can wee and sometimes during the night she will get up and want to go out.

However, recently - within the last 2-3 months I have found wet patches in her beds. When we are in the house with her she normally always gets up and goes to the door to tell us she needs to go out but recently, that is, within the last 2-3 months I have sometimes found wet patches in her beds. She still tells us when she wants to go out to wee most of the time but then sometimes it is almost as if she can't be bothered so just does it where she is! However, there is no strong urine smell to the wetness and at first I wasn't even sure whether it was urine but can't think what else it may be.

She is a perfectly healthy dog in every other way - loves her walks, runs around the house playing her games, loves her food. In the past she has had teeth out and has had the pre-op test for any kidney problems and has been fine.

I am not sure whether this has just been triggered off by something or if there is something wrong. We have a vet appointment for boosters next week so I am going to speak to them but just wondered if anyone could throw some light on this beforehand and also, where may be the best place to get some waterproof covers for her bedding if we need it in the future.

Thanks for any help.

You say the wet patches don't have urine smell? Could it be possible she's simply licking her bed excessively? I don't know much about greyhounds but I know breeds that drool a lot will definitely make wet patches everywhere they lick lol.

But if it is urine. Has anything changed in where she usually does her business ? Could it be weather related even? I know my dog hesitates more going outside during rain and in winter .

It could be spay incontinence. Some spayed dogs gradually lose some control of the sphincter that controls leakage from their bladder, which means that they sometimes leave small wet spots when they lay down. The good news is that this is easily controlled with medication. Proin (pro-in) is the most commonly prescribed med for this condition..

I would guess your Vet will want to check for things like a UTI, which certainly could cause the symptoms you describe. Greyhounds are by nature a very laid back breed, so it could be she is being lazy, but having her checked out medically is absolutely the correct first step.
