LICE on a tiny puppy!!! HELP!

For quite awhile now I've been telling a friend of mine that I really want a small bred dog and some day I would get one for myself. I told my friend what breeds I like and why and didn't think anything of it. Well, today my friend surprised me with a puppy that happens to be a mix of two of my favorite five breeds... Cocker Spaniel x Dachshund.

The puppy looks about seven weeks old and is covered in lice. Not fleas, but lice. What can I do?? She is too young for dips and collars. I will call my vet in the morning, but I'm hoping you guys might have some insight for me. Thanks!

My friend was told that the puppy had been treated for worms and had shots, but I'll assume not considering the condition of her coat.

How old is she?

All of the home remedies that I know of rely on suffocating the lice, and unfortunately it takes HOURS, I"m talking most sites recommend around 8 hours, to kill the lice. I really do think your best bet would likely be an OTC dog shampoo that kills lice, something like Hartz, and then use a flea or nit comb to go over her to get as many as possible off. You're still going to have to get rid of the nits, and for that the vet may have some type of recommendation.

most topical flea products are safe for any age puppy... even less than a week old (at least ones like Advantage, =/- Frontline and Revolution are). And all will kill Lice easily... you sure they are lice? Pretty rare to see lice on a dog (only seen lice twice in 30 years of veterinary work). Just use a low dose (1/4 to half the normal puppy dose).

Thank you, Rain. I'm sure I have a nit comb around here somewhere from when my cat caught fleas awhile back.

Yes I am very sure they are lice and not fleas. They are off white in color, the biggest ones have a bit of dark gray on the round flattish abdomen. They crawl and do not hop. There are slightly elongated nits on the puppy's hair shafts. The bugs look just like the lice that my goat had when I adopted her.

Thank you so much for your advice about how to treat my puppy. How often can I use the products without making her sick?

I gave Lilly (she has a name now) a bath with the flea/tick puppy shampoo that has oatmeal in it. The lice had made her fur course. After her bath and a very thorough combing Lilly's coat is SO MUCH softer. I can't find any live lice either. I'll re-treat in a couple weeks to kill any nits that stay on her fur and hatch.

Thank you again for your advice!
