Hello everyone. We have just commenced our dog on a course of joint guard. It appears that almost directly after we started joint guard that our dog has become hyper. He is running in circles crashing into things and won't stop for a second. We will stop this treatment immediately. Has anyone else had this problem as I am concerned it could be another problem and it is just a coincidence. Cheers millsy
That's not a side effect I would expect from glucosamine and chondroitin, unless maybe he feels better and is expressing it with activity. I would talk to your Vet and get his or her insight.
Thanks for your replies, no he certainly wasn't feeling better, had lost a lot of co-ordination and was just a different dog personality-wise, not in the room.
Quite possibly vestibular disease - from what I've read this is idiopathic and not necessarily inner-ear related??? But there was no nausea/vomiting, no head tilt and no darting eyes.
Vet wasn't sure, gave him a steroid injection and he was improving by the next morning. Pretty much back to normal now!
Time for the vet. I honestly don't think that the joint guard caused the behavior. I think it's either a stroke, my old boy had a stroke and the running in a tight circle was the way it first manifested, or vestibular disease (an inner ear problem), which can also cause running in tight circles.
Again he needs to be taken to the vet! Good luck, I pray that he'll be alright and that it's just vestibular disease.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin wouldn't cause that behavior.
I'm glad he's feeling better.
