Unhappy Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis - Anyone dealt with this?

Schminke has been in the vet's daily since Friday, June 23rd with HGE (diagnosed/confirmed). She is one of three dogs they are currently managing with the condition.

She was an otherwise healthy dog then boom - it happened. I caught it early, she was treated within 8 hours of the onset symptoms which started at 1:30 AM Friday morning, and was in the clinic for treatment by 9 AM Friday morning. We are now into day 5 and today is the first day she will not spend at the clinic on IV fluids as the vet felt she was far enough along to attempt the rest of the recovery at home. She is having slightly more formed poops but still occasionally a very small amount of blood and mucus mixed in with the stool. I'd say the poop consistency is that of not quite firm chocolate pudding (sorry for the comparison).

She is eating well, small low-fat canned gastro food given in 1 tbsp amounts every 3 hours or so from 8 AM to 8PM. She still wants to go out way too often to try to defecate so she is crated and seems more inclined to hold it and wait until an actual BM is ready to come out.

She is not very interested in water however she had lots of fluids yesterday so may not yet be thirsty. Very hungry and interested in food.

She had her last famotidine dose this morning, and still has 2.5 more days of metronidazole and 1.5 more days of sulcrate, as well as one last dose of cerenia tonight.

Throughout this ordeal she has never vomited up any blood, only bloody diarrhea. She vomited up her food early morning hours of Friday but no blood in it, just regular kibble vomit from a meal earlier in the evening Thursday.

This has literally been the most horrific experience I have ever had to deal with and it's wreaked havoc on my own health from the stress and anxiety.

I just want to know if recovery time has taken this long for anyone else, as most of what I've read online says improvement in 2-3 days but I am at day 5 with her now and while she still seems to be improving it's very slowly.

I also read it can reoccur in 10-15% of dogs...... I am praying that she will not be one of them... As she was prone to some gastro issues even prior to this HGE.

Thank you Aspen. It was so scary!

Schminke is mostly out of the woods now. We have had 4 solid normal poops with no blood and I am slow reintroducing kibble (using it as a treat right now) while she is still eating small canned food meals (low fat percentage).

We are doing beach walks (short but sweet) on leash 2-3 times a day and she has learned to look forward to them already. We live on the ocean front so we are fortunate enough to have our own access to it.

Both of us need to be a bit more active so the beach walks are a great way to start. I have fibromyalgia so sometimes it's painful but bottom line is that it's good for her and she needs it, and she comes first.
