Giardia Help

My 6 month old puppy has giardia. She was spayed and the surgery went well and she had normal poop for a couple of days and then suddenly really bad diarrhea. The vet gave her flagyl, which firmed up her stools a little bit, but they were still soft and yellow. The vet then did a fecal test and giardia was positive. She told me to continue with flagyl and gave me panacur. 5 days of panacur, 5 days off, another 5 days panacur. I'm at the end of the first 5 days and while her stools are harder, they're still somewhat soft and yellow. During this time, the vet had me switch to Hills ID (I think) canned food because they didn't have the dry food at the time and now I have the dry food so I switched her to that. So my puppy's food has basically been switched 2 times in a week. I don't know if that's contributing to the soft/yellow stools are if treatment isn't working. I pick up her poop right away. Can they be reinfected just by sniffing a spot in the dirt or do they have to ingest it again by eating it? She doesn't eat anything off the ground, just sniffs around a lot. Does anyone have any suggestions/advice? How long does this treatment take to make the stools normal again?

Giardia Help

Our dog, when he was a pup, had giardia and we fought it with panacur as your vet describes. The food changing can cause soft stools. If the stools remain soft, I recommend trying a small bag of Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach (chicken or salmon) mixed in. We figured out that chicken and our dog don't get along. He does well with the salmon and now we have both our dogs on the Pro Plan 30/20 Salmon with no problem...all dry.
