Favorite heartworm/flea medicine combos?

We have 2 dogs now that are on Sentinel Spectrum for heartworm. We really need something for fleas now, too.

The Spectrum is about $50/6 months. I called the Vet and they have Comfortis for the fleas which seems to run about $80 online, so we're up to approx $130 for each dog per 6 months.

Vet also said they have Trifexis, which apparently can handle both heartworm and fleas and this seems to be around $95 for 6 months, so that's a pretty good savings, I think. Although this one seems to have a bad taste (hard to get some dogs to take it?) and also comes with the internet stories of this causing some deaths in some animals.

Any other combo I should be considering?

I use a Seresto collar. I order it from Chewy.com... it's about $50 and lasts 8 months. I've been very pleased with the results. I haven't found a single tick on her since she's been wearing it and we are in the woods a lot in the spring/summer.

EDIT: I use Heartgard for heartworm. I usually get a coupon form my vet and buy a 12 month supply, which saves me some money.

I use Nexgard for fleas/ticks. Both of my dogs love the taste (in fact when my husband takes his allergy pills, they run over assuming it is for them!)

My BC used to be on Revolution, but she ended up with three ticks, which I found irksome. Since they started Nexgard, no ticks at all.

Samantha had a terrible reaction to trifexis, virtually lost control of her rear legs for a day or two, We tried Nexgard, she wouldn't eat while she was on that. Finally settled for heartgard for heart worm control, and Frontline + for fleas. She seems to have no reaction to either of these, so that's what we use.

thanks for the thoughts all. I've read good things on the Nexgard, but its super expensive.

Laco, that would be super scary situation to be in. Glad she came out ok.

Good luck - I hope you find something that works well for your dog.

I agree the Nexgard is not inexpensive! We get a bit of a break because we buy it for a full year, but not much.

I also use the Seresto collar. My cat used it last year while the dogs were on Frontline Plus and I loved it so much (and it's so cost effective) that we bought it for all the dogs this year.

For heartworms, I believe Chisum is on Interceptor.

Revolution is a pretty good product for heart worm and fleas, though the flea kill is a tad slow compared to many other products... but still close to 100% effective. Very safe, too.

Thanks for the continued thoughts. I didn't know Revolution was a combo product like that. Seems reasonable in cost, too.

I'm going to have a further look at those collars. I never really considered those, but they seem to get really good ratings.
