Excessive shedding in unhealthy dog. We need tips!
6 weeks ago we adopted a 15 month old Great Pyrenees/Australian Shepherd mix. We got him through a rescue group who had saved him from a kill shelter in the south. The rescue had him treated for heartworm (injection method), mange, severe fleas, yeast infections and aural hematoma. He also tested positive for exposure to lyme and he is positive for ehrlichia. Shortly after we got him we discovered he also had roundworm, and so we are currently treating him for that with our vet. He has been one unlucky guy. :'(
We need advice on how to prevent him from shedding so much, if it's even possible. He sheds enough to fill up an entire vacuum canister every two days and it is so excessive I believe it must have to do with his health problems. No matter how much we brush him it doesn't help. We've even used the Furminator to remove most of his undercoat, and I don't know how it's possible, but the shedding amount is the same. We are vacuuming every day and are fine with that but would like to fix this issue if we can. Are there any supplements we could give him? The past few days I've been adding a little flaxseed oil to his food but haven't noticed a difference yet.
If it helps, the rescue had him on a good quality grain-free food for the 3 months they had him and were getting him healthy; we currently have him on half Taste of the Wild and half Fromm Gold Large Breed (tapering him over to the Fromm permanently)
