Probably a mild ear infection. Our poor dogs have gotten them many times, where they scratch and rub at it and cause it to get red. Our dogs tend to get it from playing in the pond and getting water in their ears. They can also have issues when the hair in their ears grows too long.
It could also be allergies, which can cause a dog to scratch themselves more than usual and get inflamed skin.
I don't believe our dogs have ever had ear mites, but they do have the same symptoms. Usually there is a lot of head shaking and ear scratching, major discomfort.
Hope this helps. A vet can know for sure. : )
